The Fool Walks on Air!
by Michael Stuhlmiller
December 1, 2023 There's a beautiful image in the Ryder Tarot
It shows the Fool walking along the edge of a precipice.
It looks as if he's about to fall. His gaze is directed upwards into the distance. One more step and he'll fall into the abyss. At his feet, you can see a small dog playing.
I've often wondered what this image is supposed to express. Is the Fool really about to fall?
What makes the Fool walk so confidently is his trust in air. The most stable element we can walk on.
Everything can break: stone, iron, and wood. Air is the element of fantasy, our imagination. Nothing is more stable than that. As long as we retain our imagination, we won't fall.
The small dog as a companion symbolizes the ancient tiger of fear that bites us in the heel. The fear is still there, but it's become a playmate. Nothing that hinders us, but rather keeps us alert.
That's why the fool never falls!
